The Problem Site hosts two kinds of Problem Pages: Public Problem Pages,
which are open to any visitors from around the world, and Private Problem Pages,
which are perfect for school classroom use. The following is a description
of both kinds of pages. If you are interested in hosting either kind of page,
Private Problem Pages
The internet is littered with 'Problem Of The Week' or 'Problem Of The Month'
pages which were started by schools or teachers, but were quickly abandoned because
they were 'too much work' to maintain. This is why Virtu Software has
developed an easy-to-use database driven problem site. The page can be maintained by
any teacher in any subject area, without knowing a lick of html programming!
Why host your problem of the week online? There are many reasons:
- Student enjoyment: students' enjoyment of the problems is increased by having an online scoresheet
with bonuses given for those who submit solutions first.
- Ease of grading: The student's solutions are typed. You review
their solutions using your web browser, simply checking 'correct' or 'incorrect',
and optionally adding a comment for the student.
- Immediate feedback: As soon as you grade a problem, the student gets immediate
feedback, so they can try again.
- Grade Reports: Your administrative page will generate a report of your
students' responses, including: number of correct solutions, number of submitted solutions,
total score, and quarter/semester average.
- Less expensive than paper: An average school has 150 students taking Algebra One.
If each of those students has a problem of the week each week for 30 weeks of the school
year, at a cost of $0.006 per page, that is a total of $27.00 for the year.
For $20.00, you can host your page online, and make your life easier at the same time!
- Summertime Fun: Well, why not? When your students go on summer vacation, you
lose contact with them, right? Not necessarily! You could continue posting problems
through the summer, offering bonus points for the beginning of the next school year. This
will encourage students to continue their education throughout the summer!
Public Problem Pages
Our goal at The Problem Site is to host a 'Public Problem Page' for each of
the following areas:
- Algebra One
- Geometry
- Algebra Two
- Mixed Bag (including a variety of topics in high school math curriculum)
- Calculus
- Brain Food (brainteasers covering many subject areas--not just math!
- Challenge Problems
- Physics
- Chemistry
- SAT Preparation
- Grammar and Word Games
We are also open to other ideas for public pages, if you have one you would like
to host. Our primary stipulation is that each public page must have significantly
different content. There is no charge for hosting a public page.
