Add New Students

When your students begin using the Virtual Classroom, they may already have a member account on the site.  If they do, you do not need to use this feature.  Instead, provide your students with your teacher code (found at the bottom of the page here).  If your students do not already have member accounts at The Problem Site, you can create accounts for them by accessing the "New" feature in the Students module.

  • Enter the student's first name, followed by a space, followed by their last name.  Please note that this information is never visible to the public; it is for your records only.
  • When you finish entering their name, press TAB to move to the next field (Login Name).  After pressing TAB, wait a moment before typing; the site will attempt to create a sensible login name for your student based on their name.  Since the login name may appear in high score lists on the site, the login name will not include both first and last name.  If you don't like the site's recommendation, you may override it with your own choice.
  • The site automatically generates a password for your student.  The password is a random sequence of short words.  If you don't like the password phrase, you can click 'generate new password' to create a new password phrase, or you can simply type a password of your choice.
  • Repeat this process for each student you wish to add.
  • If you have more than 10 students to add, click "Add more blank rows" when you get to the end of the form.

When you are finished, click Submit.  User accounts will be created based on the login names and passwords provided.  If the login name you requested already exists on the site, you will be prompted to select a different login name.

A new screen will be displayed which shows all the usernames and passwords.  You will only have access to this screen once; after you navigate away from it, you will never be able to re-access the students' passwords!*  Therefore it is imperative that you print the screen before navigating away.

We recommend printing the page, and then cutting it into strips, so you can give each student their own username and password.

*  Once you have given the login information to your students, the account belongs to them, and they have the capability to modify their own password.  The student's privacy is the reason you may not subsequently access the password page for your students.  If you are concerned about students losing their passwords, you can inexpensively add a Student Credit to each student, which allows you to recover their account and data in case of a lost password.
