From Hers to Yours

She took a moment to close her eyes and,
be swallowed in the wave of things crashing against her.

She pressed rewind to that day you were standing on the shoreline, cheek to cheek, and eyes closed.
She remembered how it felt to be young and careless. At times, reckless.

She pressed forward to the day you walked what seemed like miles just to have coffee every week.
She smiled and thought that no matter how much things change, you’ll both still meet up for coffee.

She pressed forward again to the day you told her to conquer each day because her heart was in pieces.
She teared and remembered that you held her up when everything fell apart.

She pressed rewind to the day you told her about your kiss before you left for two weeks to explore.
She remembered the look on your face and the shy twinkle in your eyes as you told her.

She pressed forward to the day you traveled together for the first time, 2400 miles away from home.
She basked in the memories of excitement and new horizons reached.

She pressed rewind to the time you’d hide under her comforter and talked until the morning.
She laughed a bit upon remembering why you felt such great need to hide.

She pressed rewind to the day she met you with your long hair and elementary braces.
She remembered it wasn’t long after until you became her best friend.

She then opened her eyes and parted her lips into a smile,
and there you stand in a dress so lovely she could cry.
Your eyes smiling like they never have before,
as you make a pledge to your favorite person,
and share your life, your heart and soul to the one you love most.
And as you go on giving your word, she too was giving a promise.
A promise of faithfulness and loyalty,
an assurance that no matter how much things will change,
she will be the same pillar she’s always been for you.
