Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Kenzie Fell Down on November 30, 2007
"Tristan is Alec's seven-year-old brother, Josh and Danny are nineteen and twenty-two."

The result of too many depressing songs.

Tyler couldn't understand why Alec hated Christmas so much. Every year, as lights and trees and Santas went up, his spirits went down. He moped straight through December and into January. Finally, Tyler got annoyed and irritably asked Alec if it was just that he was a little psychotic, or did the sight of happiness and peace and all that throw him off, or what? He knew this was unfair; Alec wouldn't even step on spiders, and always helped the younger kids on the playground when they were bullied. But he didn't take it back, and when Alec didn't answer, he stomped home in a huff. Hours, days, weeks passed, and they said not a word to each other. Then, one day Tyler's doorbell rang. Hopes rising, he rushed downstairs, but all that lay on the stoop was a handwritten letter.

Tyler,
Im sorry. I don't mean to be awful like that but I guess I just really do hate winter. Not because of that whole happyness thing. Its just that every year about that time my Dad starts to remember my Mum, cuz she died in January, only 5 years ago and she hated drinking and drunks and he knows how angry she'd be at him and he promises himself he'll lay off the beer, only he never does enough to make him not a drunk. Only just enough that he's really REALLY angry instead of just angry and lazy. Luckily its cold so I can were long sleeves and not look wierd. And Josh and Danny were arrested the first time for drugs around Christmas time and he feels guilty about not going to church anymore and all those other kids get new toys but not Tristan and I hate it. So. Please forgive me. If you do Im having my birthday party in the park. Ill be 11!
