Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Maine Character on May 25, 2010
"The other night in youth group, we talked about jealousy, so that's what I tried to portray here."

I Wish I Were an Evergreen

What would it be like, to never sleep, to never loose the green leaves, to have the squirrels fight over you?

What would it be like to have the kids play with you until they got covered in your abnormally sticky pitch?

What would it be like to shelter the ground in the winter with your thick branches, leaving a place to stay for shelter for a small deer?

I have none of those traits. The only thing people look to me for is my beauty in the Fall, and my sap for food.

In the winter I have no use except to just stand there for a strange man to lean against while he smokes his cigarette.

What do I mean to the world? What do I mean to you? I mean, I'm not one to complain, but I only wish I were an evergreen, like a pine tree. . .They have all the pictures in the winter because they stand out.

But not me. I am not special. All I want is to be an evergreen, but that will never be.
