Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

Unmissed

by Sylvan Sylph

Some time ago life dictated that I had to part from a number of friends. Some I expected to miss a great deal, others to a lesser extent. One in particular I discovered I had become closer to than I fully realized until the time came to go our separate ways.

I think in part as an attempt to ease my own heartache and in part out of a desire to spare my friend pain I considered the possibility that perhaps I would not be missed when we parted ways. I have no idea as to the accuracy or inaccuracy of that notion, but in contemplating it I found myself scribbling down poetry.

"Poem 1

Do you ever find yourself hoping that someone does not miss you as much as you miss them, just to spare them the pain?"

Unrequited

I shall miss you,
But you will not miss me.
When I am lonely
I shall go to the sea;
And, calling your name,
I shall long to be free.
Yet chains 'round my heart
Say this can never be.
For I shall miss you,
And you shall not miss me.

"Poem 2

If I can say I would rather not be missed than to cause sorrow is that love or is it simply my stubborn foolishness? "

Willingly Forgotten

I will miss you,
Though you will not miss me,
As seasons come and go,
As summer turns to winter,
And rain turns into snow.

I will miss your friendly face,
Your presence and your smile.
I’ll miss your familiar voice,
Your laugh once in awhile.

I will miss the times we had,
As days turn into years.
I’ll miss moments that we shared;
I’ll shed some silent tears.

But you’ll not think of these things;
Your eyes, they will be dry,
Your days be filled with laughter--
I would not see you cry.

Instead, you shall go on
As if things were the same.
I’d not want it otherwise;
I do not wish you pain.

Parting may sweet sorrow be,
But sorrow it is still.
To dim the smile in your eyes
Is something I’d not will.

In moments that pass us by,
In years that come, then flee,
I know that I shall miss you;
But you shall not miss me
--And that is as it should be.
