Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Scribbler on October 18, 2008
"I enjoy observing the behaviour of the birds that visit my garden."

Pecking Order

Fourth-from-top parrot sat on a high branch looking down. Third-from-top joined him.
‘Any seed?’

‘Bit of old wheat the bronzewings didn’t find.’

‘Have you tried whistling?’

‘Not yet. The humans are there though.’

He flew down to a lower branch, ideally placed for peering in through the window. Humans just can’t resist my crimson plumage, maybe a bit of a whistle will do the trick – one of those bell-like sounds I make.

Aah! Here comes the seed.

Top-parrot flew on to the seed tray, where Fourth-from-top was busily pecking. Oh well, he’d had a good go at the sunflower seeds before he arrived. Top-parrot was so pushy. He’d even fly down to the ground to snatch a favourite seed he saw about to be eaten. Here he comes. What’s wrong with the seed tray? I’ll go and have a drink instead.
On the way Fourth-from-top snatched a seed away just as Third-from bottom was about to eat it. Third-from bottom jumped back with a squawk, then chased a fat bronzewing pigeon away from where it was quietly eating.
