Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

Fiction Excerpts

by Jonathan Montague

There are too many fantasy worlds which have been untouched, untraveled. Hopefully, we will all get to experience them here, together, if only for a short while.

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Jonathan Montague on June 19, 2014
"15 minutes was certainly not enough time to complete this thought!"

Defending the Homeland

"Sire! We're under attack!" the good general shouted from across the throne room. I sat back, tapping my fingers in a slow rhythm across the throne's armrest, and awaited his report.

"They crossed the river and have landed all of their troops. They have occupied the entire beach! Our port town has been burned to the ground!" he continued, half gasping for breath, half holding back his rage.

I knew he'd be angry - perhaps even angrier than I. This is my kingdom, after all, the most powerful kingdom known to man. How dare they attack us - how dare they attack ME!? I'll have their heads skewered through spears as soon as I get my hands on them! But more on that later; we'll need to take care of the current threat first.

"If they keep moving at the rate that they're going right now, they will be at our capitol within three days' time!" he affirmed. "And they'll be right at our doorstep... Sire, if you die, this kingdom will perish. If they destroy our capitol, all hope is lost not only for us, but for our entire kind!"

There was a chilling silence after he said that. It felt as if my heart itself had skipped a beat. To think that we would no longer have a home certainly had an eerie effect to it.

"Sire... what shall we do?" he asked calmly. I tapped my fingers some more, head and eyes unmoved.

I took a breath. "We will need to defend this capitol at all costs. Gather all of the troops and prepare for battle. Have every soldier here, ready to defend their home! I will leave it up to you, general, to lay the traps. We will whittle them down so much that they will regret ever setting foot on our land!"

"Aye, sire," he confirmed. He bowed and made his way out of the throne room in a hurry. Indeed, there was no time to be lost. Let us hope that we can do this successfully, or else we will perish for all eternity.
