Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Angela on October 18, 2007
"Author didn't really know where to go with it when she started but she knew that she didn't really want to write a speech and she wanted it to be ironic and different from what others may have written. She hopes that you at least found it somewhat amusing."

A Very Brief Campaign Speech

She stood atop the platform looking at the multitude of faces in the crowd. Shutters clicked, camers zoomed in, and flashes... well, they flashed. The murmuring grew slightly softer as she adjusted the constricting collar on her shirt. She picked up the microphone and began.

"Friends and neighbors. Fellow collegues. It brings me great joy to be able to come and talk to you today. Before I start with anything serious, I'd like to address issues that are of utmost concern to me."

Here, she paused, to let the dramatic effect sink in. Near the back of the crowd, a couple people were pushing their way to the front.

" There are many things that I stand for and just as many things that I refuse to tolerate. One thing that I stand for is truth and honesty. I refuse to stand up here and be someone I am not. I will not lie in order to become the President. I will be truthful, and honest. I will play fair. Honesty... truth... fairness... they will be characteristic traits that I will be able to represent. I promise that"

In the middle of her sentence, two policemen pushed their way through the crowd so that they were within earshot of the campaigner. "Hey! You! On the stage! How'd you get here. And where's the other candidate?! You're not even allowed to run for President. How the -insert explative- did you get up there?"

"I promise that I will leave here without getting caught. Thank you and goodnight!" she shouted as she dropped the mike and lept off the stage.

As she ran through the crowd she could here people talking. A majority of them made a quip about her whole "honesty and truth" spiel. A couple, not so bright people commented on other things such as, "Even if she isn't dressed professionally, that's a really cute shirt," and "The things people do for publicity these days."
