Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Sylvan Sylph on July 10, 2008
"Sometimes I find the blank whiteness of a page to be intimidating. One day I found myself faced with uncertainty as to the worth of my words while staring at a single sheet of paper. This was my ultimate response."

The Blank Page

The blank page leaves no room for me to fill. The blankness swallows up the whole. The stark whiteness intimidates me. There is no space for me to leave my mark. All is consumed by the emptiness. This feeling of uselessness is from myself and no other, brought about by what I see. This illusion is only a phantom of my mind, and mine alone.

But I grow weary of the whiteness, of the forbidding of the paleness of the page. So I take up my pen and deny the words in my mind. I defy the resistance inside. I will not fear to speak, to open myself to the world. I will not be afraid of who I am or of leaving a trace of myself behind. I will find a space to fill. I will fight the emptiness and overcome. The blank page cannot remain forever so.
