Birds

by Scribbler

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Scribbler on July 6, 2008
"A poem about galahs, a small Australian cockatoo."

Galahs

Galahs

With pink and grey plumage
And a raucous squawk
Afraid of nothing
Until the hawk hovers near.
The alarm is raised
And almost as one
They rise and turn and then are gone.

The feeding flock when on the ground
Their waddling gaits belie
The acrobatic skills and their mastery of the sky.

Roosting in a drought dead tree
Cockatoos chatter then hush.
Soft pink grey blossoms on every branch
In the fading light are the tree's last chance
To be beauteous as spring’s first blush.

"I saw this bird from my window."

Thornbill

Little grey thornbill

Feather fluffed ball 'gainst a windy wintry day
Then in a flash it suddenly darts away.

"I really enjoy watching the birds in my garden."

The Currawong

The currawong sits on the edge of the bowl.
Strong and sturdy; big beaked bird.
All shiny black with a white tipped tail.
And white winks hidden in folded wings.
He dips his beak, throws back his head.
The other birds are not in view-
They all respect the currawong.
The black one drinks his fill, then flies
‘Til his call is heard from distant treetops.
A rainbow of parrots return to my garden.
They all respect the currawong.
